Tariq the Hafiz

Tariq Khan is in many ways a typical New York City twelve year old. He loves to play Grand Theft Auto on his his Playstation 2. He loves to listen to the hip-hop music of Fat Joe, T.I. and 50 Cent. But what is not typical is that he also just became a hafiz in the Islam religion by memorizing the entire Koran in its Arabic. He doesn’t understand the Koran very well, but he can recite it from cover to cover. He accomplished that feat in less than two years by working 40 hours a week. According to Islamic tradtion, this gives him the priviledge of taking ten people from his family to heaven with him—

Whoever reads the Qur’an and memorizes it, while he regards what it makes lawful as lawful and unlawful as forbidden [practices what it says], Allah will admit him into Jannah [heaven] and will accept his intercession on behalf of ten such persons of his family who were doomed to the fire of Jahannum [hell].
So you get a free ticket to heaven (and out of hell) because your kid memorizes the Koran? I guess that encourages parents to stand over the little tykes and “encourage” them to stick to their studies! We may want to dismiss such a belief as ridiculous, and rightly so. But Muslims believe that the Koran is the word of God and that God's word is something good to know. So they read and even memorize it. Does that really sound so silly?

How about us? Do we believe the Bible is God’s inspired word? How do we show that? Do we read it to find what it is that God wants us to know? Do we teach our kids the Bible and give them a thirst for its truth? Is it possible that Muslims may live more consistently with what they believe about their book than many Christians live consistently with what we say we believe about ours? This is something we may need to think about.

I noticed that is says not just to read an remember, but to practice what it says. I know I am remiss in teaching my children the reverence for the Word of God as I should. Makes we go back and read and paraphrase another devotional I received. If we do not commit ourselves to knowing what is in God's Word and following it, we will fail to know and experience God. God's Word is life to our souls. It provides knowledge that leads to life."
God has given us His Word that has specific laws and principles that must be followed if we expect His blessing. Many of us, I know from observation, take God's Word lightly. Plenty believe they can violate His Word without consequence. Or many think that they can make up for not following God’s Word with one of the “good Christian” deeds and God will over-looked our “minor violations”. This is not true; the Lord upholds His Word. It can be life, or it can bring death. When God provides instructions, we need to follow them. Reading and understanding this about God through his word is the only way to bring a healthy fear of the Lord into our lives and keep striving toward our goal of becoming more like Christ. We must all read, study and have a fearful respect of God's Word. For truly; it is life or death. We should ask the questions of ourselves: Do we take God's Word seriously? Is it life or death for us today? Most importantly, Do we try to feed upon His Word daily so that we might know Him and know His precepts?
