Not Quite Finished

This morning as I started my daily Bible reading, Lynn said, “You should be about finished with that....” And then she added, “… it is December already, right?” Of course what she meant was that I am about done with this year’s read-through the Bible plan. It is about time to come up with a new daily plan or start all over with this one. But really, no matter how many times we read through the Bible, we are never really finished with it. There is always something new to learn, some new perspective to gain. And not only are we never through with the Bible, but the Bible is never really through with us. That is the point, right? We continue to learn more and more of what God wants of us.

If we ever get to the point where we already know “the truth” and there is no possibility that we could possibly learn anything new, then there is no reason to continue to read the Bible. But if God is constantly revealing Himself afresh in His word, if there are parts about Himself that He has revealed but which we have not yet mastered and if God’s Spirit within us is constantly prodding and probing us, well, then maybe we need to keep on reading.

We don't read the Bible just because we gotta— we don’t get a chip or gold star or something for being a “Daily Bible Reader.” We read scripture because God has revealed Himself there. And God in scripture calls us to grow and change and become more like Him. So, no I’m not quite yet done with the Bible yet… and it’s not quite done with me.

Although I have read the Bible a lot over the years, it has mostly been through concentrated study (or non-concentrated is more discripted). Its just been in the past 3 years that I have tried to read through the entire Bible. Failed miserably the first time. Last year I got mostly through, but skipped some chunks of the schedule because I got way behind. I think that I will make it this year. I only have 11 of the Minor Prophets to read left. Then I can start over anew. I'm not through with the Bible either. And God's word will never be through with me. Praise God!

We should be aware that our Heavenly Father is searching our hearts constantly (and we should be without fear as we invite him in). Asking Him to bind up any weakness in us. We should also study His words alone and together and hide them deep within our hearts as absolute truths to be recalled and meditated on as we worship him each week. (there are good resons why we should set time aside for that (as we are instructed by his words to do that)we should also keep it near to us and go to it in times of need and times of plenty (amen).

If you all will excuse me now I am going to go read the bibles some more. . . every “version” that I find “accurate”. Greek and Hebrew dictionaries are useful to help us stay “on track” so that we don’t get lead astray when “searching the scriptures. ‘Commentaries’ should not be ‘counted’ as “gospel”. (esword is a great resource) I heard someone say, studying the bible with my human mind and brain is like going to the ocean with a spoon. Every time I get a little out of it I know there is so much more available within it’s depths and breadths. Have you ever swam in the ocean and realized just how vast it is or looked into the heavens in aw of the creator as I vew his perfect creations.
